The Both/And Approach to Doctrine

Try it. If there are two teachings in scripture that are evident why do we assume that they cannot both be true?

For example, we know that prayer has power and that God uses our prayers to make a difference in his plans. Yet at the same time, we know that God has preordained all things in accordance with his will. That makes absolutely no sense to me. At all. But I see both to be true.

God functions on an entirely different level than us, and so even when it doesn’t make perfect sense, if the bible says it, we are to believe it.

This is how I’ve come to understand God’s sovereignty and man’s will. They both exist. I see in scripture that man has free will and the choice to accept or reject Christ. However, I also see that God has chosen from before time those who he would redeem. Again, I have no idea how this works, but I believe.

Both/And

“Guys use relationships to get sex; girls use sex to get a relationship”

“Girls, you’ll either be remembered for your character or your cleavage”

— Some choice quotes from my Sunday School teacher.

18:07

“God gave us a free will, not for us to misuse for our own selfish desire but to be creative in the framework of God’s will. God is anxiously awaiting the outcome of our innovative ideas.”

I can’t really say that I agree with this in a Biblical sense, but it sounds nice.

I always thought this transition would be exciting and new. It’s just painful and depressing.

9:53

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune–without the words,
And never stops-at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I love Dickenson. She seems like someone I could have just curled up with and watched a movie. Me an Emily. Shoot, now you got me daydreaming.
